RED LIGHT THERAPY (Photobiomodulation)

Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) or Red Light Therapy, is an advanced technique that involves the application of red and near infra-red light to injuries. This therapy aims to enhance wound healing, improve soft tissue recovery, reduce inflammation, and provide relief for both acute and chronic pain. Originally developed in 1967, it has now evolved and is commonly referred to as PBM.

How Photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) works:

The red and near-infrared light used in PBM, ranging from 600nm to 1000nm, can be emitted through laser or high-intensity LEDs. Unlike surgical lasers, PBM lasers and LEDs operate at low intensity with no heating effect. The effects of light therapy are purely photochemical, akin to photosynthesis in plants. When applied at the correct intensity and treatment times, red and near-infrared light reduce oxidative stress and increase ATP production, resulting in improved cell metabolism and reduced inflammation. Pulse-based treatments can enhance these effects, while continuous beams work best for analgesia.

Features and benefits of Photobiomodulation:

Safe and effective:

Photobiomodulation therapy devices deliver power within the range of 10mW to 500mW (0.01 to 0.01 Watts), with a power density typically ranging from 0.005W/Cm² to 5W/Cm². This ensures a safe and controlled approach to therapy, promoting positive outcomes for patients.

Versatility in treatment:

PBM therapy is highly versatile and finds application in various conditions, including soft tissue injuries, joint conditions, neuropathic pain, non-healing ulcers, and pressure ulcers.

At Omnia, our focus is primarily on the use of PBM for the relief and management of acute and chronic pain. See At a Glance for the PBM treatments available…
